Overview

Christ has purchased redemption (Q21–28); now the catechism asks how that redemption becomes ours. The answer: by the Holy Spirit, who applies it to us through effectual calling, working faith and uniting us to Christ. This is the doorway from Christ’s accomplished work to our experienced salvation.

Q29. How are we made partakers of the redemption purchased by Christ? A. We are made partakers of the redemption purchased by Christ, by the effectual application of it to us by his Holy Spirit.

Q30. How doth the Spirit apply to us the redemption purchased by Christ? A. The Spirit applieth to us the redemption purchased by Christ, by working faith in us, and thereby uniting us to Christ in our effectual calling.

Q31. What is effectual calling? A. Effectual calling is the work of God’s Spirit, whereby, convincing us of our sin and misery, enlightening our minds in the knowledge of Christ, and renewing our wills, he doth persuade and enable us to embrace Jesus Christ, freely offered to us in the gospel.

Exposition: Q29 makes the crucial point that redemption purchased must be redemption applied — and the applier is the Holy Spirit. Q30 names the means: the Spirit works faith and thereby unites us to Christ in effectual calling (union with Christ is the source of every saving benefit). Q31 then anatomizes effectual calling in three steps: the Spirit convinces us of sin (the conscience awakened), enlightens our minds in the knowledge of Christ (the gospel understood), and renews our wills (the heart of stone made a heart of flesh) — so that we “embrace” Christ freely. Note: He does not merely invite but “persuade and enable” — effectual calling actually accomplishes its end.

Pastoral & Practical Significance

These questions answer the believer’s wonder: “Why am I a Christian, when so many who heard the same gospel are not?” The answer is not your superior insight or stronger will, but the Spirit’s effectual work — He convinced, enlightened, renewed, and enabled you to embrace Christ. That humbles all boasting and steadies all assurance: your coming to Christ was His gift. Q31 also gives a useful map of conversion: a sense of sin, a sight of Christ, and a renewed will to embrace Him. If you find these in yourself, take heart — they are the Spirit’s fingerprints. And because the same Spirit who began this work will complete it (Phil. 1:6), the salvation He applied He will surely finish.
