Ecclesiastes

Ecclesiastes is the Bible’s most unsparing book about the limits of a life lived “under the sun.” The Preacher tests everything a person might build a life on — pleasure, achievement, wealth, and wisdom itself — and finds each one hevel: vapor, a breath that cannot be grasped. He looks squarely at oppression, at crooked courts, at the plain fact that death comes alike to the wise and the fool, and he refuses every easy answer. Yet the book is not despair. Running through it is a repeated call to receive bread, wine, work, and companionship as gifts from God’s hand, and a steady insistence that God has set eternity in the human heart and will bring every deed into judgment. It ends where wisdom must end: “Fear God and keep his commandments, for this is the whole duty of man.” Read through a biblical lens, the Preacher’s honesty about a world subjected to futility prepares the way for the one who entered that futility and broke it. Each chapter has a full deep study and a short summary handout.
