Numbers
Numbers is the book of the wilderness — forty years between Sinai and the Jordan, told through two censuses and two generations. It opens in order: the tribes counted and camped in ranks around the tabernacle, the Levites set apart to guard it, the silver trumpets and the cloud that leads the people out from the mountain. But within three days the grumbling begins, and at Kadesh it hardens into rebellion: ten spies spread fear, the people refuse the land, and a whole generation is sentenced to fall in the wilderness. The middle chapters carry both judgment and grace — Korah swallowed by the earth, Moses striking the rock he was told to speak to, fiery serpents answered by a bronze serpent lifted up so that everyone who looks may live. Then Balaam, hired to curse, can do nothing but bless: a star shall come out of Jacob, a scepter shall rise out of Israel. The book ends on the plains of Moab with a new census, a new generation, daughters granted inheritance, and cities of refuge — a people ordered once more, waiting at the edge of promise. Read through a biblical lens, Numbers shows the God who is faithful when his people are not, and whose serpent lifted in the wilderness points straight to the cross.
