Isaiah
Isaiah is the prophets’ cathedral — sixty-six chapters spanning judgment and comfort, exile and homecoming, a vineyard destroyed and a city made new. It opens with a courtroom: the LORD’s own children have rebelled, worship has rotted into performance, and the vineyard he planted yields wild grapes. In the year King Uzziah dies, Isaiah sees the Lord high and lifted up, hears the seraphim cry “Holy, holy, holy,” and is sent with a hard message to a deaf people — yet the stump holds a holy seed. Through Assyrian crisis and Babylonian shadow the promises gather: Immanuel, God with us; a child born to us who is Mighty God and Prince of Peace; a shoot from the stump of Jesse on whom the Spirit rests. From chapter 40, comfort breaks like morning — “Comfort, comfort my people” — as the incomparable God carries his flock like a shepherd, mocks the idols, and raises up his servant: despised and rejected, pierced for our transgressions, crushed for our iniquities, the one by whose wounds we are healed. The book closes with a free feast for the thirsty, good news for the poor, and new heavens and a new earth where all flesh comes to worship. Read through a biblical lens, Isaiah is the Old Testament’s fullest portrait of Christ — the Holy One of Israel who judges, redeems, and dwells with his people.
